Coady Institute announces 2011 Katherine Fleming International Development Award recipient

100ANTIGONISH, Nova Scotia – Dr. John Gaventa, director of the Coady Institute at StFX, announced today at the annual Coffee with Coady event, that Yvonne Marimo of Zimbabwe is this year’s recipient of the Katherine Fleming International Development Award. The scholarship, now in its 12th  year, is awarded in memory of the late Katherine (Katie) Fleming, StFX ’85, who worked tirelessly on behalf of children in Africa.

Marimo is taking the Institute’s flagship 19-week Diploma in Development Leadership program. Earlier this year she completed the Certificate in Community-Based Microfinance and the Certificate in Livelihoods and Markets.

“Back in Zimbabwe, during the lowest point in our history, it was the women working in unrecognized labor who ensured the survival of their families and our economy,” she said. “When women have economic independence they are more likely to be able to make good decisions about their security, their welfare, their dignity and social justice.“

The Katherine Fleming International Development Award was established in 2000. Organized by her classmates and family, the award supports tuition costs for a female leader from Africa to attend the 19-week Diploma in Development Leadership program. This program enhances the managerial, organizational, advocacy and leadership skills of development workers from around the world. Special consideration is given to women who, like Katie, are leaders in their communities.
