In 2011, a committed group of Haitian leaders from the private sector, government departments and civil society established the Centre Haitien du Leadership et L’Excellence (CHLE, Haitian Centre for Leadership and Excellence). These leaders were motivated by a desire to learn from and inspire others with positive examples of civic-minded leadership across all sectors of Haitian society.
With the support of the ONEXONE Foundation, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, the TK Foundation and the Canadian International Development Agency, the Centre offers leadership education programs for women, youth, civil society, municipal and national government officials, and business leaders. The Centre also conducts research and produces publications that feed into CHLE’s curriculum and are used in public awareness campaigns to highlight successful citizen-led development and the role of leaders in making this change possible.
The Centre formed a partnership with the Coady International Institute in 2011, and since then more than 15 Haitians, under the auspices of CHLE, have graduated from Coady’s education programs. Coady staff also co-facilitated five short courses with graduates in Haiti and jointly produced five case studies of civic-minded leadership and citizen-led development.
