Host Organization Details: Botswana is faced with a high prevalence of HIV, especially among young people. National prevalence stands at 17.1% in a country where 70% of the population is aged below 29 (Youth by Botswana definition). National youth prevalence stands at 20.2% and for people aged 20 – 29, the average HIV prevalence is 33%. HIV prevalence among females in this age group is 67.2%, which is 35.2% higher than the rates seen in males of the same cohort. In response to the high rates of infection among young people and the disproportionally high rates among females, the Youth Health Organization (YOHO), in partnership with affiliated youth groups based in Gaborone, Ghanzi, Hukuntsi, and Letlhakane, are implementing the Scaling up HIV Prevention with Youth Program (SHPYP) to reverse this pattern.

The program is implemented by affiliate groups with coordination and technical support from YOHO. It will aim for zero transmission lifestyles among youth aged 12 – 29. It is guided by the following strategic objectives:
  • To create broad awareness and increase comprehensive knowledge of HIV and AIDS among 100% of in-and out-of-school youth aged 12 to 29 years living in Gaborone, Ghanzi, Hukuntsi and Letlhakane areas to adopt key HIV prevention behaviours.
  • To strengthen life skills of 50% of youth aged 12 to 29 years living in Gaborone, Ghanzi, Hukuntsi and Letlhakane to cope with HIV prevention challenges.
  • To strengthen organizational and program management capacity of YOHO and 4 affiliate youth groups to effectively and efficiently manage the scaling up of HIV prevention with youth in Gaborone, Ghanzi, Hukuntsi and Letlhakane.

The intern will support various YOHO projects which contribute to the objectives of the SHPYP.
